St Croix Hotels
St Croix Hotels are located mainly in the capital of St Croix, Christiansted, although there are a
few others dotted around St Croix. Most of the St Croix hotels are two or three star but they do have good reviews.
Make sure that whichever of the St Croix hotels you choose offers the facilities you require.
St Croix Hotels
The range of St Croix hotels is fairly limited, but I do not mean this in a bad way. St Croix is
small, only 28 by 7 miles, so there is not a lot of room for hotels. There are however well over a dozen St Croix
hotels, most of which are two or three star hotels. The majority of the St Croix hotels are situated in the capital
of St Croix, Christiansted.
When you are choosing your St Croix hotel, it is useful to know a little about the topography of the island. The
majority of the east end of St Croix is rather hilly and steep, as it is on the north side of the island going from
Christiansted to the west. A fairly even plain slopes down to the south coast from the northern hills. This area
was once the best sugar land on the island.
The trade winds blow for just about the full length of the island, although the hills of the western part of the
island receive a lot more rain than the east end. Despite having said that though, the annual rainfall is not heavy
and drought is more of a problem than flooding. In general, the annual rainfall can vary a great deal, but it
averages about 40 inches a year.
Quite severe and drawn out periods of drought have been a problem from time to time. This is exacerbated by the
lack of fresh ground water and lack of freshwater streams, rivers, or bays on the island.
However, this is not a need for concern for residents of St Croix hotels as all hotels and most private homes
have their own water facilities. The quality of the tap water in St Croix hotels is regulated by the government and
is considered drinkable.
Most of the St Croix hotels are located in Christiansted so transport should not be a problem. Some hotels can
provide a transport service to residents wishing to go to popular destinations or they may organize tours.
Otherwise there are buses and 'shared taxis', which operate on fixed routes for fixed fares no matter where you
get on or off. There are also sufficient private hire taxis, which are regulated, but which are more expensive.
You should take your time when choosing which of the St Croix hotels you book into, because they are not all the
same. I do not mean quality here, on the whole the standard is good two or three star and the staff are cheerful
and attentive. No, I mean that some St Croix hotels cater to different needs.
For example, some St Croix hotels prefer an older client?le and so do not encourage children, because they do
not cater well to their needs. Other St Croix hotels might accept family pets. Some may be interested in fishing,
others in diving. Therefore, it is a good idea to check out the range of St Croix hotels before booking.
