St Croix Vacation Packages
St. Croix is the largest of the three main U.S. Virgin Islands with its 84 square miles of
rolling hills and sandy beaches, yet it gets fewer visitors than St. Thomas and St. John. The island is a pleasing
middle ground between St. Thomas's focus on mass-market tourism and St. John's rural ambience. An occasional cruise
ship calls in pretty Frederiksted, located at the western end of the island. The ship's passengers, along with St
Croix vacation packages holiday makers spread out across the island to enjoy beautiful views, quaint shops and
outdoor pursuits.
St. Croix has almost 55,000 inhabitants, nearly the same as 28 square mile St. Thomas. It has a refinery and
other smaller industries providing employment, so that there is less need to focus on tourism than on the other two
islands. Since the population density is low, it is unusual to find crowded streets in the Christiansted and
Frederiksted shopping areas.
Christiansted is usually the first stop for most people on one of the great St Croix vacation packages. It is a
charming town with architecture that reflects the island's Danish history. Many of the buildings are litterally
centuries old, they sit at the harbour's edge, the pastel blue, green and ochre buildings trimmed in white with red
tin roofs.
The harbour is home to about three dozen sailboats and a handful of charter boats that take visitors on St Croix
vacation packages sailing, scuba diving or sport fishing. Seaplanes use the harbour for their trips to and from St.
Thomas. A water taxi ferries people to Protestant Cay, a small island located in the middle of the harbour where
there is the Hotel on the Cay, a popular lunch and water sports location for people staying on St Croix vacation
packages in and around Christiansted.
Frederiksted, St. Croix's other town, is more like a village. It is 45 minutes drive from Christiansted via busy
highways, or if you have the time, through the rain forest. The town has the Frederiksted Cruise Ship Pier, which
is the island's deep-water pier. You will find excellent restaurants and some shopping. However, when the cruise
ships leave, the town practically closes down.
You may not find all the shops and restaurants open if a cruise ship is not in port, so before travelling from
your St Croix vacation package resort or hotel, it would be a good idea to call to make sure before you head
west.
